On the town

Ready for a not-so-everyday night out? Try these ideas.

Get on the good foot
Take your family or group of friends out for a night of dancing. Book a group ballroom dance lesson with a local dance instructor, or go to the nearest bar or club that has a swing or samba dance night. Or just park the car, crank up the radio, hop out, and get busy.

Flea Market Hunting
Spend a day with family or friends at a local flea market. It's a great place to find unique and quirky treasures, and hey, you even get to eat corn dogs while you're at it. For a fun twist, randomly assign a name to everyone attending and have each person buy an inexpensive item for their secret pal (set a price limit like $20). When you get home, everyone can exchange gifts over refreshments. Or make a list of unusual items and turn your trip to the flea market into a scavenger hunt.

The Event-Of-The-Month Club
Start your own Event-Of-The-Month club with family and friends. Each month, a different club member gets to pick an event for the group to attend — a concert, symphony, art gallery opening, movie, state fair, sporting event, etc. Pick the event at the beginning of the month so there's plenty of time to prepare (like ordering tickets or arranging for babysitters). With the Event-Of-The-Month club, everyone gets a turn to share their favorite interests with their family and friends.

Volunteer
You don't have to join the Peace Corps to make a difference. Get started by cleaning up a local outdoor area, like a park, roadside or campground. Get the group to adopt a stretch of highway. Prepare a musical program and perform it at a foster home, hospital or retirement community. Find an elderly person or couple who needs help caring for a lawn, cleaning or repairing their home or shoveling the snow. Put together a puppet show for the children's ward of a local hospital — then let the kids keep the puppets. If you look around, you'll find no shortage of opportunities to contribute to the lives of others.
